What is a Neighbourhood Forum
Forum – Arena in which individuals come together and discuss issues.
1 Community based, resident lead, voluntary body.
2 Made up of local residents within the
geographical boundary - Forum Members.
3 A Management Committee is elected annually to conduct the day-to-day activities
on behalf of the Forum Members.

Officers are chosen from amongst the Management Committee to undertake specific
duties, these include Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, Publicity
Officer.

Lobby group ~ Transportation, Health, Environment, Housing, Crime, Anti-social behaviour.

Hold regular open Public meetings where Councillors, Police, PCT reps,
and Council
Officer are invited and answer questions.

Forums produce regular Newsletters to keep the Community informed of local events,
issues or developments.
8 Forums receive an annual grant from Birmingham City Council to help with
operating costs. (Room-hire, refreshments, advertising, newsletters, leaflets, distribution,
printing etc). The Forum can also seek funding from other sources.
9 Planning applications are received by the Forum so that Public consultation can take place.
10 Forums can campaign on single issue items such as objections to a
phone mast near a local school, or a red route proposal.
11 Forums can organise social events such as fun days and Community days.
12 Forums are governed by a Constitution and code of conduct.
13 Since Devolution and Localisation the importance and relevance of
Forums has increased as more agencies are required to work with local residents
and communities. It is now built into part of their framework, and governance
structure.
14 Forums are recognised by Birmingham City Council and other agencies,
such as the Police, and Primary Care Trusts.
15 Positions on various bodies are allocated to Forum members - Ward Advisory Board, Constituency Committee, Neighbourhood Management boards.
